About Woke Work
There is an increasingly palpable sense of urgency pervading our world right now. We are experiencing a spiritual cleansing – a cleansing so pure that it’s like ice cold water interrupting a peaceful sleep and countless are feeling our collective stirring.
Many are touting the phraseology of “Woke,” but what does that really mean? In truth, unless you are completely exhausted, it takes minimal effort to wake up. You can even wake up from a coma, but then what? Waking up is just the beginning. There is work that has to be done. Normally when you wake up, if your mental and physical human body is functioning, an action is required. You have to swing your legs to the side of the bed, sit up, and stabilize your feet on the ground. You have to get grounded. Once you have grounded yourself back into this reality, then you stand up and get busy – in motion – with the rest of your day. After “woke” comes the real work.
What is the “Work” that we have to do? Racism, bias, inequity, prejudice, and cross-cultural division won’t magically end just because we discover and understand what they are. There is still much work to do. The work is to dissect and dissolve all of the things that divide us. Not just the things that we can see, but more importantly, the things that we feel.
